On the trail

Hello!

I've just returned from a little trip out to the lovely village of Saltaire, so I thought right now might be a good time to do a spot of blogging. I visited the UNESCO world heritage village, which is situated near Bradford to drop of a selection of my prints and pinned work for the Saltaire Arts Trail this weekend. It's my first year taking part in the event, but I had heard lots about it long before I decided to apply. The arts trail takes place over the whole of the bank holiday weekend, and gives visitors the opportunity to see contemporary art and craft in the perfect setting - inside the homes of many Saltaire residents! A great number of generous people are turning their kitchens, hallways and living rooms into galleries for the trail, each house hosting the work of a handful of artists and makers. My work will be on display at 1 Myrtle Place, home of the Saltaire Book Shop (number 10 on the trail), along with work by painter Claire West, printmaker Janine Denby, glass maker Lydia Haines and paper sculptors Bonkers Clutterbucks.

While you are in Saltaire perusing the open houses you can also pop into the Victoria Hall, and check out the Maker's Fair, or have a visit to the stunning Salts Mill. Or simply wander the streets, green with envy at the beautiful houses, as I did this morning.

I shall be back in Saltaire myself on Sunday, hanging out at my trail spot as well as taking a look at some of the other open houses, so do pop in and say hello! My goods friend Charlotte Morrison and Janis Goodman are also taking part in the open houses, and checking out the website I can see many more intriguing artists on the list....

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hello there!

I would normally send out a blog on a Friday, but I'm going to be enjoying a special day off tomorrow to have a look at a few houses (exciting!), so I thought I'd send out a little update today instead.

I've been working this week on a small selection bound for The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle. I will be exhibiting alongside a fantastic array of contemporary artists in the Spring show, opening on March 8th. So far I have four pieces for them, including 3 brand new ones, and I may get another completed in time. I tried to find an interesting selection of subjects from around the North East, and ended up going back to one of my favourite subjects; The Zetland building in Saltburn-By-The-Sea. I think this must be my 6th work including this former grand hotel, but I just love it. I finished  this one this morning, which is quite appropriate since I spent last Valentine's day in Saltburn.

I decided it was high time I tackled at least one of the Tyne's lovely bridges, so went with my personal favourite, the swing bridge.

...And I finally had an excuse to have a go at a particularly gorgeous folly at Gibside Hall, near Gateshead. The Banqueting House is actually a self catering property, and is leased by the Landmark Trust if you're tempted (I am!).

Finally I had a lovely bit of news this week - the good people at Saltaire Arts Trail have accepted my application to take part in their Open House weekend in May. This means that somewhere in the UNESCO world heritage village of Saltaire my work will be on display in someone's living room, along with lots of other artists including my good friends Janis Goodman and Charlotte Morrison. Hooray!

Morning!

Just a quick post today to remind you all to get on down to Masham this Sunday for Crafted by Hand at the town hall. This fantastic one day art market will be showcasing the cream of British artists and makers, and is a perfect opportunity to start (or continue) your Christmas shopping. As well as stalls to peruse, you can also enjoy some tasty homemade refreshments from the onsite cafe, and even try your hand at stone carving, blacksmithing, ceramics and more. Artists/Makers involved include:

Vinegar and Brown Paper (glass)

Charlotte Morrison (ceramics)

Elizabeth Shurrock (Bookbinding)

And many more...

On top of all that, you will be greeted upon entry by a rather 'handy' papercut installation, inspired by the many artistic disciplines on display, made by me! As my very first installation, I can't wait to see it in place, and I hope visitors to Crafted by hand will enjoy looking at it as much as I've enjoyed making it.

The installation explores the multitude of skills represented at the event, as well as taking design inspiration from my favourite aspect of Masham town hall, the wallpaper. You'll understand when you see it!

So don't forget - Sunday, Masham Town Hall, 10am to 4pm, and only £1.50 admission. How can you resist?
